Gen Z Speaks: I used to feel mediocre as a neighbourhood school kid, but no longer

12 Feb 2023

The article featured SP Diploma in Creative Writing for TV and New Media student and former TODAY intern reporter Lou Si Yuan who shared that she used to feel mediocre as a neighbourhood school kid, but over time, she realised her school did prepare her for life in the way that she needed – which was to grow at her own pace.  She was not burdened by unhealthy expectations to excel and experienced the freedom to cultivate her interests and explore different topics that were not covered in her schooling syllabus.  The urge to defy society’s stereotypes of neighbourhood school students spurred her to work harder in Secondary 4 to prove others wrong.  Si Yuan pushed herself harder for her O-Levels to ensure that her grades qualified for admission into SP, where she was given many opportunities to explore her interests, ultimately leading to an internship at TODAY.
