‘Girl power’: Only female in milling event at ‘Olympics of vocational skills’ out to break barriers

15 Sep 2024

Shanice Wong represented Singapore in the 2024 WorldSkills Competition in Lyon, France, from 10 to 15 September, as the only female competitor among 26 participants in her event. She had previously won a gold medal at the 2023 Singapore WorldSkills Competition, beating five male competitors in a precision machining event that involved creating components like smartphone parts and prosthetic limbs. Wong credited her patience, steadiness, and attention to detail as advantages. Her journey began in March 2022, during her second year at SP, where she pursued a Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering and was introduced to milling. After excelling in a computer numeric control (CNC) milling course, SP invited her to participate in the WorldSkills competition. Wong continued training daily at SP even after graduating in May 2024, deferring her mechanical engineering studies at NUS to 2025 to focus on the competition. One of her cherished memories from Lyon was exchanging badges with competitors from other countries.
