Innovative student projects that benefit society
13 Jan 2025
SP Open House was held from 9 to 11 January 2025 at the SP campus. The students displayed around 27 projects on sustainability, digital transformation, and academic innovation that aim to address real-world challenges and promote innovation in various sectors. Students presented initiatives related to sustainability, such as extracting oil from soursop seeds for skincare. SP Diploma in Chemical Engineering student, Dhasna said that by reusing the seeds of soursop, food waste is reduced. The team hopes to contribute to healthcare companies in future. Other projects included AI-powered food inspection and safety systems, automated drones for ship rescues and dispatch, and virtual reality therapy for seniors. Ezra Yusof and Davier Lim from the Diploma in Computer Engineering have developed a combination of technology and artificial intelligence to not only identify dangerous glass fragments in food but also deliver food flavourings in an automated manner. The technology is currently being used at NUS U-Town and the team hopes to bring the technology to hospitals or and pharmacies. Murugan and Guvendra from the Diploma in Marine Engineering have developed a drone for rescue operations at sea. The drone is equipped with a camera, loudspeaker, and lifebuoy to provide quick and safe rescue in the maritime industry. To overcome the issue of loneliness in the elderly, four students in the Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering have integrated VR technology with games for rehabilitation. With 12 different VR games, the elderly can stay home to do physical mobility exercises instead of heading to hospitals or clinics. COMMS note: This is part of our SPOH 2025 stories.
