Lost at sea: At least 18 Singaporeans have died in regional waters since 2007

Article featured the various factors that have killed 18 Singaporeans in regional waters since 2007. Captain Sahwan Osman, a senior lecturer at SP’s Singapore Maritime Academy, opined that boats and vessels registered in Singapore undergo rigorous maritime registration and licensing processes by the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore, in order to be deemed seaworthy. However, even the best-maintained vessels can struggle in bad weather and Captain Sahwan shared that vessels must be careful during monsoon periods and when Sumatra squalls pass over Singapore waters.
