04 Oct 2022

Article mentioned SP students Timothy Liau and Jamie Yau, who are co-founders of a group of students and researchers who are developing and training an artificial intelligence-powered system called Empathly to scan online messages for racist, sexist, condescending and violent overtones. The system will detect slurs in English, Singlish, Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese, with plans to expand its tracking to other languages in the future. The team is looking to test a working prototype with professionals and make a final version commercially available by the end of 2022. Timothy and Jamie added that they were inspired to create Empathly after experiencing and observing hurtful behaviour online and offline.
