S’pore Poly graduate carves a path despite the odds
09 May 2019
Article featured SP’s Tan Kay Yong Gold Medallist and Diploma in Visual Communication and Media Design graduate Tan Wee Kiat. He shared how he grew up in an underprivileged home and landed in the Normal Technical stream in Secondary School. At that point in time, Wee Kiat continued his notorious behaviour, which led to four strokes of the cane and a risk of expulsion in Secondary One. However, a turning point came in Secondary 3, when he was mentored by his mathematics teacher, Mr Lee Yew Meng. Wee Kiat soon realised that if he put in the effort, he could excel in his studies. He did well for his N levels and enrolled in the Nitec in Visual Communication course at ITE College Central before coming to SP. At SP, Wee Kiat took part in various competitions and secured an internship as a graphic designer at an award-winning boutique design agency. Wee Kiat aims to get a scholarship to study at the London College of Communication after completing his national service. COMMS Note: This is part of our Graduation 2019 stories.
