S’poreans must avoid sense of entitlement and develop collective responsibility instead: Sun Xueling

15 Nov 2022

Speaking to 90 students from higher learning institutes during a dialogue session at SP on Tuesday 15 November, Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs & Ministry of Social and Family Development, Ms Sun Xueling, said that it is a misconception to think that anyone who fails does not deserve help because they do not make enough effort for themselves. The dialogue session, which focused on refreshing meritocracy and strengthening social mobility, was part of the 'Forward Singapore' movement, an initiative by the leadership of Singapore's 4G leaders to further refresh Singapore's social compact. The students, who were between the ages of 19 and 26, were divided into smaller groups to share their reflections and ideas on the topic before presenting it to other participants. Speaking to The Straits Times, second-year student from NP, Claudia Selvakumar, said her group discussed social mobility and how those who did not succeed early on may have a belief that they are incapable of contributing to society.
