Singapore Poly scholars overcome the odds

30 Jan 2019

Article featured SP scholars Dean Lim and Jayne Chan, who shared how they overcame the odds and achieved personal success. Dean was nine years old when his father passed away and his mother fell into depression. When he was in Primary 6, the year he took his Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE), his mother's mental health worsened and it took a toll on his results. Dean was posted to the Normal Academic stream but he worked hard as he wanted to make his grandmother proud. He achieved six points for his N-level exams and entered SP's diploma in energy systems & management through the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP). He was awarded the SP Engineering Scholarship. On the other hand, Jayne, who was also a PFP student, received the SP Sports and Arts Scholarship. The 20-year-old shared that she was an average student in secondary school and never obtained good results. Her focus was on sports instead of studies and she struggled to cope. However, during her time in SP’s PFP, Jayne picked up time management tips and was able to balance studies with her love for sports. She has also tried out for the national women's rugby team and has been on it since.
