Article featured SP’s Diploma in Optometry (DOPT) student Insyirah Syarafana Mohamed Ikhbal, who was part of the team of DOPT student volunteers who performed free eye checks for 64 senior citizens from St Luke’s ElderCare and SASCO Senior Citizens' Home in conjunction with World Sight Day. The team conducted screening for common eye conditions affecting the elderly, such as refractive error, cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Insyirah shared about the satisfaction she derived in being able to apply her knowledge from practical lessons in real life. Last Friday, Insyirah was also part of the first batch of DOPT students who underwent the inaugural White Coat Ceremony. The ceremony aims to empower students to deliver best-quality eye and vision care to patients. It symbolises the transition of Year 2 DOPT students to the role of an Optometrist who provides eye care services to the community and patients at the SP Optometry Centre, which sees about 3,500 patients a year. Insyirah shared about her sense of pride in being recognised as a healthcare provider through the ceremony. (Berita Harian, 17 Oct 2018)
