Starting a start-up: 2 polytechnic students defy odds to create eco-friendly dental floss picks
19 Nov 2024
NP student Lingesh Sachuvanantham and SP student Javen Koh co-founded Kloss to address the environmental impact of dental floss picks. Unlike disposable picks made from plastic and nylon, their biodegradable and reusable floss picks use natural materials. Users can reduce plastic waste by up to 95% by rewinding new floss onto the sturdy handles after use. The idea emerged in 2022 when their innovative solution won second prize at the School Sustainability Challenge by Junior Achievement Singapore, earning them $3,000 in prize money. They invested in a $220 3D printer to kick-start their business. Mr Sachuvanantham, a business student at NP, shared that they aimed to tackle overlooked everyday waste, while Mr Koh, pursuing a Diploma in Maritime Business at SP, emphasised their commitment to creating eco-friendly alternatives without compromising hygiene. The Kloss floss pick, priced at $10 and including a six-month supply of floss, is available on their website. Their project highlights the collaborative spirit and innovation fostered by Singapore's polytechnics. Since winning the sustainability contest prize money and putting in hundreds of dollars of their own money into Kloss, they have secured approximately $30,000 in non-equity funding from SP, NP, and the #OCBCCares Environment Fund. They are also seeking another $50,000 to expand its business.
