Technology can help achieve ‘effective class size of 1’ in S’pore schools: Chan Chun Sing

12 Feb 2025

On 11 February 2025, Singapore's Minister for Education, Mr Chan Chun Sing, discussed leveraging technology to create an "effective class size of one" by personalising education to individual student needs. He highlighted the role of AI and data science in customising lessons, aiming to overcome the traditional challenges of balancing quality, scale, and cost in education. Minister Chan cited Singapore Polytechnic's initiative of providing online teaching resources, allowing teachers to assess students' understanding based on their engagement with the material. He also noted that while technology can enhance learning, human teachers remain essential for building relationships and instilling values. Additionally, Minister Chan addressed concerns about the tuition industry, encouraging parents to focus on nurturing their children's unique strengths rather than relying on private tuition.
