Two students break personal grounds to receive the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA)

Article featured two students who are recipients of the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA), Hong Yibo from SP and Ye Ailing from TP. Yibo has been a quiet boy since young. Back when he was in ITE, his teachers recommended for him to participate in NYAA activities to better open up to his peers. This led to him volunteering his service in centres that housed the elderly and children with special needs. The highlight of his NYAA journey was his community service trip to Thailand where he helped to build a hall for a primary school. He commented that although it was a tiring experience, he is happy to know that the kids would get to study in a better environment. For Ailing, her parents are diving instructors and she has been exposed to the ocean since young. This developed her love for the ocean and inspired her to organise activities to create awareness of the importance of preserving aquatic animals and the ocean’s environment. Under NYAA, she also challenged herself by working with Sentosa’s patrol team to allow 50 TP students to interact with aquatic animals, in order to understand the ocean better. Currently, she is working on an initiative to help Indonesian fishermen find economic ways to clear the litter in the sea. (Lianhe Zaobao, p10)
