The ‘Mangrove’ Scent

Mangroves are various types of trees up to medium height and shrubs that grow in coastal sediment habitats. Singapore, is one such island, surrounded by mangroves. The Ministry of Environment and Water Resources asked for the creation of a scent that is symbolic of ‘mangrove’ and could clearly depict Singapore as an ‘island’. By April 2012, a group of three Singapore Polytechnic students conjured a scent that is reminiscent of Mangrove yet palatable to consumers as an air freshener.

The scent, unique in its concept was brought to the World Expo 2012 held at Yeosu, Korea. It was specially created to tell the story of Singapore - a City of Contrast where nature conservation goes hand in hand with urban development.
