Ong Jin Zen is on the extreme right
Singapore Polytechnic’s (SP) Diploma in Business Innovation and Design graduate Ong Jin Zen (‘Zen’) won the Third Prize in the overall category in the USPRINT competition which was held in August 2015. Zen, as he is commonly known, was the only student from Singapore Polytechnic to be ranked in this overall category. The competition was open to all full time students of Nanyang, Ngee Ann, Singapore and Temasek Polytechnics. Students invested and competed in a virtual investing and trading game which tests their investment strategies, market theories and equities trading. uSPRINT runs using real market prices of the Singapore Exchange (SGX) and is designed based on the current online trading platform of UOB Kay Hian.
Zen’s success is no mean feat! What is interesting about Zen is that his diploma focuses on developing creative options for businesses using design thinking. Finance was not the focus of his studies. However his interest in finance was developed in Year 2 when he learnt Financial Analysis and Management. It gave him a foundation in trading by understanding financial reports and financial trends. He decided to put his skills to the test by entering the uSPRINT competition. His father, a businessman, was also an influence in Zen developing his interest as his father dabbles in equities.
By using virtual money, he took greater risk in his investment decisions and emerged as the third prize winner. Speaking to Zen, it is clear that his participation in this complex competition has made him more confident.

Besides his interest in finance, Zen also plays the guitar and had built his own computer, learning about computer science through research and online courses. Zen hopes to further his studies in Computer Science. With his perseverance and curiosity, we are confident that he will be able to meet any challenges ahead!
