The annual pre-university seminar was held in late May this year. Among the 20 students from Singapore Polytechnic were 2 third year students from the Diploma in Business Innovation and Design – Lye Jia Wei and Jamie Loh. The guest of honour was DPM Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
The main theme of this year’s event was’ Living the Singapore Spirit’. Jia Wei was placed in the ‘Holding Our Own, Making a Difference’ team. The teams were composed of students from junior colleges and polytechnics and they were tasked with raising awareness of communicating across borders. They held their event at the Rainbow Child Care Centre and organised a fun-filled day with board games (monopoly style), and trading using sweets and chocolates for the pre -schoolers.
Jamie was involved in the ‘Together We Progress’ team which looked at volunteerism and creating awareness among society about volunteerism. The learning point for Jamie was to educate friends and family about how they could get involved in volunteerism now, not needing to wait for retirement. Volunteerism, she learnt, is not a day’s event but a long term commitment where relationships are built.
Both Jamie and Jia Wei benefitted from the experience and were happy to make new friends and learnt how to adapt to the different working styles of team members from different disciplines, whether college or polytechnic.
The annual event was a success as the participants learnt how different members of society could come together to function as a society. First impressions don’t really count as the days spent together helped overcome barriers and build bridges to transform the world.
