Nurturing the healthcare professionals of the future

Once again, Singapore Polytechnic (SP)’s School of Chemical & Life Sciences (CLS) has produced a bumper crop of Healthcare Scholarship winners. This year, a total of 13 graduates from the Diploma in Biomedical Science (DBS); Diploma in Nutrition, Health and Wellness (DNHW); Diploma in Food Science & Technology (DFST) and Diploma in Biotechnology (DBT) received scholarships to further their studies.

The scholarships fully cover tuitions and compulsory fees for the duration of their studies, and even provide recipients with a monthly allowance for living expenses. Upon graduation, they would serve out their bond at one of the public healthcare clusters.

SP Buzz caught up with two of the scholarship recipients, Cassia Teo from DBS and Jenani A/P K Rajan from DNHW who received the Health Science Scholarship and the Health Science & Nursing Scholarship respectively. Both of them will be furthering their studies in Australia and shared with us their awesome experience so far.

Cassia attributes part of her success to her passion in Biology. Receiving her scholarship from Minister of Health Mr Gan Kim Yong was validation that it is more important to follow your interest. This interest was further developed by the relevant and interesting DBS course. ‘I felt like the course had a great application in life,’ said Cassia.

Upon completion of her degree, Cassia hopes to become a paediatric speech therapist to improve the lives of children with speech disorders. She feels that giving back to the community will be very rewarding for her.

For Jenani, receiving the scholarship was a surprise. ‘I didn’t feel that I was as good as my peers, so it was a pleasant shock when I got the news,’ she said. She confides that if not for the DNHW course, she might have never gotten the scholarship. Jenani exclaimed, ‘My lecturers spurred me on and nurtured me to do my best’.

Interestingly enough, both Jenani and Cassia were attracted to SP through word of mouth from SP’s alumni. ‘I didn’t really know what I wanted to study, but I heard good things about SP. So I went for the Open House, spoke to the lecturers and made my decision right there and then,’ said Jenani. ‘I’m glad that it all worked out.’

We are glad that it worked out for Jenani and the rest of our scholarship winners.
