Aaron Lim, a DBID graduate from the pioneer batch and the diploma’s gold medallist, was awarded the HDB Undergraduate Scholarship recently. “It was a proud moment and an absolute honour to receive the scholarship. To be recognized by the organization for my achievements and not having to worry financially or finding a job after graduation, meant that I could really focus on experiencing university life.”
He recounts his experience applying for the scholarship, “The application process was very competitive. There were so many high calibre students after the same goal. Aside from the psychometric tests and interviews with senior management, the rigorous process also required us to be involved in activity based assessments, where we needed to work in simulated group settings with other competing applicants to asses our ability to work in teams and showcase our presentation skills.”
Aaron is currently serving his nation, wearing his uniform proudly. But he recalls how DBID has contributed to his lifelong ambitions, “DBID was all about preparing us for the future. The strong fundamentals in business imparted to us resulted in an analytical and discerning mind, giving us the confidence and knowledge we needed to advance our careers. Just as valuable is the constant theme of developing the 'human' aspect of a being. The course taught us how to be resolute, optimistic and empathetic individuals, always reminding us to land a positive impact wherever we may be. The many success stories of our alumnus are testament to the the excellent work that DBID has done for its students.”
This young man has definitely come a long way since his days swimming competitively for both school and nation. He tells us the most important takeaway from his time here at Singapore Polytechnic: “In the 3 years I spent as a student in DBID, I learnt that the most important thing is to find something you care about, and care about it deeply. That will navigate you through whatever adversities you face in life.” We wish him all the best, and look forward to great things to come.
