Home Is Where The Heart Is

It’s good to be back! Hearing the laughter and excited chatter outside The Agency on 12 October 2012, it's clear that there’s a lot of catching up to do between former CASS students, their juniors and of course, their lecturers.

Many alumni members were glad to reunite with their friends and lecturers. Most of the participants had graduated recently and after just a few months, have missed SP immensely.

“I really miss the lessons, my lecturers, and I miss the room, I miss T2125, I miss the school, I miss my friends,” said Georgia Ho, our Diploma in Creative Writing for TV and New Media (DTVM) alumnus who is now studying in Nanyang Technological University.

“SP is like my second home,” she added. “SP helped me build my confidence and my friends say that I have changed to be more mature.

This was pretty evident to her juniors as well.

Seeing the alumni for the first time after they have graduated, Avelin Yong, a Year 2 DTVM student said, “I think it’s so amazing that we get to see our seniors and it’s like they have matured so much.”

Dennis Chiang, a Diploma in Media and Communication (DMC) alumnus, graduated in 2011 but is still involved in coaching his juniors in SP’s debating team.

He said, “I miss the proximity because I live in Dover, so I always walk to school. Sometimes I comeback to SP and eat here.”

Besides the reunion and the buffet dinner, another highlight of the event was a talk by three prominent speakers: Mr Viswa Sadasivan, CEO of Strategic Moves; Mr Alvin Tan, Artistic Director of The Necessary Stage; and Mr James Keng Lim, Director of Integrated Communications & Digital Creative Director of Dentsu Singapore.

The theme of the talk was “Make Every Connection Matter”.

This was a topic relevant not just for the alumni, but also graduating students.

Viswa Sadasivan, CEO, Strategic Moves, on the importance of making and

maintaining connections

James Keng Lim, Director of Integrated Communications & Digital Creative

Director, Dentsu Singapore. He spoke about thinking differently and taking risks

Venessa Khoo, a year 2 student from our Diploma in Applied Drama and Psychology (DADP) said, “I heard from my lecturers that some speakers are coming down. It will probably be quite enlightening.”

Afiq Azman, a Year 3 student from DMC, agrees.

He said he had come to “hear what the industry people have to say about their experiences”, and to have fun with his friends.

Goodie bags for CASS alumni

The participants were not disappointed. The speakers shared stories on making the right connections, forging friendships and how to take risks.

Jeremy Lee, a DADP alumnus who graduated in 2011, was inspired. He said the session “touched on things we already know and makes it clearer”.

For Georgia, it was yet another made-in-SP experience that helped her mature.

Her take-away from the speakers was “to be true to yourself, stay connected with your friends and don’t be afraid to follow your dreams”.
