Sony Kicks Off Inaugural I.C.E Program for Budding Filmmakers

Exceptional Talents in Digital Video Production Recognised by Sony & Singapore Polytechnic I.C.E Award 2011

Singapore, March 8, 2011 – To kick off its inaugural I.C.E Program in Singapore, Sony South East Asia collaborates with Singapore Polytechnic (SP) to offer students from the institution’s School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology (DMIT) the unique opportunity to be part of an initiative which will further hone their passion and skills in creative digital video production.

As part of the I.C.E Program this year, the Sony & Singapore Polytechnic I.C.E Award was created to recognise outstanding students who have not only achieved strong academic merit, but also demonstrated a strong commitment and passion in developing their craft in the digital video production medium.

“The creation of Sony’s I.C.E Program endeavours to reach out and support promising young talents who are driving the future of media and entertainment, and to serve as an inspirational platform for these aspiring individuals to persist in their creative pursuits. In doing so, we hope to cultivate and elevate filmmaking and digital video production talents to greater heights,” said Mr Peter Fong, Head of Broadcast & Professional Division, Sony South East Asia.

“The partnership with Sony will go a long way to enhance the learning experience for SP students. The platforms for content creation in broadcasting are ever-changing and the collaboration will propel our students to the forefront of this industry. Our students are now learning how to produce in 3D stereoscopic. Through the program, they might even leapfrog to the next new thing in content production. For those selected for the program, the experience will greatly enhance their market value when they graduate,” says Ms Georgina Phua, Director, School of Digital Media and Infocomm Techology, SP.

The award process is conducted in two phases, starting with the nomination of five candidates with strong academic performance from SP and taking either the Diploma in Digital Media or the Diploma in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics. The second phase follows with the final judging of the top five finalists by the nomination committee formed by representatives from SP and Sony. With extensive knowledge and involvement in the Singapore digital media scene, the judging committee evaluates based on presentations by the top five finalists to select the top two winners.

The nomination criteria are based on the students’ potential beyond just academic work alone; but also their ability to demonstrate technical know-how and industry knowledge, as well as a demonstrated commitment and passion to his/her craft. In addition, the judging committee assesses their contributions in the final year project - the creation of a short film.

Two outstanding students with the highest scores will emerge as winners. The winners of the Sony & Singapore Polytechnic I.C.E Award will be announced on 11 March at Render 2011, the graduation show for students from the School of DMIT. The winners will be awarded with an all-expenses paid trip to attend the 83rd National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention in April 2011, where they will have the opportunity to experience the world’s largest broadcast industry event. The NAB convention is an annual pilgrimage for broadcast and production professionals, where thousands from around the world converge in Las Vegas every year.

All students are also given an exclusive coaching and technical skills training in a master class by industry veteran Alister Chapman. With over 20 years experience as a producer, Director of Photography and Stereographer, Alister has extensive experience producing 3D and HD documentaries and other television programmes and regularly shoots for BBC and National Geographic.

On top of that, to further encourage and motivate the students for their hard work, the top four final year project groups will also be in the running for the best short film created. The group with the best short film will receive SGD$1,000 worth of Sony vouchers.
