DEPM Team Travels to Austin Texas to Present Winning Proposal

A team of four final year students and one academic staff from the Diploma in Integrated Events & Project Management (DEPM) attended the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA)’s Convening Leaders Convention from 7 to 11 January 2016 in Austin, Texas, USA.

The PCMA Convening Leaders Convention is an annual event that brings the most influential leaders in the event planning industry together where over 4,000 meetings industry leaders participate in three days of educational sessions and networking opportunities.

The students went on the invitation and full sponsorship of PCMA after emerging as the champions at the MICE Challenge 2016 - a nationwide competition, organised by Singapore Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (SACEOS), for all tertiary students majoring in MICE or Business Events, Business Management, Hospitality and Tourism related fields.

The team presented its winning proposal first at PCMA U, a programme targeted at local university students majoring in business event related subjects. At the session, our students had the opportunity to gain feedback from the local students and industry mentors.

The team also presented its proposal at the Global Lab, a connection zone for global business event strategies to meet, network, exchange information and learn about destinations and partners that are committed to doing business globally.

“Though visibly frozen by the cold weather, SP DEPM students were impressive and left the audience in awe. Singapore had lots of coverage in PCMA Convening Leaders this year, but the hottest topic about Singapore was ‘Have you seen those students? Oh my God, they are good!’ They were so impressed that they came up to us and said they will ask their Singapore office to hire such students as this is the type of talent they are looking for,” said Ong Wee Min, Executive Director of Expo Sales, Marina Bay Sands.

The students also had the opportunity to attend many useful sessions by other speakers and workshops by professionals during the convention.

Overall, the students were humbled by the hospitality of their local hosts and felt that this trip has increased their exposure and world view of the immense opportunities in the industry. They also feel more confident to share their ideas to a wider global audience.
