Asian Music Field Trip

13 July 2010

The year 3 students of the Diploma in Music and Audio Technology went on a field trip to the Asian Civilizations Museum at Empress Place on 13th July 2010. The trip was scheduled from 1 to 4pm.

The idea behind this visit was to give students an experience of the Asian culture, which would help them understand the rich cultural heritage of Asia and put into perspective what they have learnt about the culture of Asia in one of DMAT’s course module Processes in Asian Music.

"As a lecturer, I feel that the goal of the trip was well achieved. I come to realize that after this trip, many students were keen to learn more about the rich and varied culture and religion of Asia." – Timothy Rodrigues (Lecturer, DMAT)

31 DMAT students arrived at the Asian Civilization Museum

Students sharing their discoveries

A total of 31 students participated. They were divided into 3 groups and given a guided tour by experienced museum tour guides. Each guided tour lasted about one and a half hours.

The different types of instruments were displayed too

The guides were very knowledgeable and everyone thought that the trip was indeed worthwhile. There were many areas of the culture and religions of Asia that many of the students are unaware of. This was a good opportunity to come back to the roots of Asia and of course this includes its music too.
