The IT Whizz

SP graduate wins IT Youth Award for outstanding contribution to Singapore's IT development.

Singapore Polytechnic's Diploma in Information Technology (DIT) graduate Liu Junhua has added another feather to his cap with his latest accolade – the IT Youth Award 2013.

The award by the Singapore Computer Society seeks to commend youth who have contributed greatly to the IT profession and development of IT in Singapore.

Expressing his joy, Junhua shared, "I'm excited that the industry leaders recognized my efforts and contribution to the IT community. This is truly a significant milestone in my life!"

In SP, Junhua had led his team, Viva Studio, to clinch the SiTF Award (Tertiary Category) and First Prize in SLA Spatial Challenge First Prize (Tertiary Student Category) plus several other awards with their final-year project, Silver Radar, a mobile application that aims to improve Singapore's homeland security.

Silver Radar is an integrated Command and Control simulation that tackles fire emergencies and crime cases. Silver Radar's idea improves the capability, efficiency and mobility of emergency reporting and handling. The project was also nominated to represent Singapore at Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards (APICTA) 2011.

During his internship at the Microsoft Singapore, Junhua was involved in the project Classroom of the Future (COTF 3.0) at NIE. A collaborative initiative by Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), the project explored the possibilities of key technologies and solutions for teaching and learning. And beyond his academic achievements, Junhua had also developed IT solutions for external organisations.

The IT whizz had chosen his course in SP as he felt that "no one can live without IT in the 21st century". And it was in SP that Junhua's passion in IT was ignited.

"I really enjoyed the learning experience in SP. It built up my confidence and gave me a strong foundation of technical skills and hands-on ability.

However, the most valuable thing that I have learnt in SP is – I don't know anything. A lecturer told me in my first year, 'The more you know, the more you know you don't know'. After studying for many modules and working on many projects, I see clearer and clearer about the wisdom of that saying."

Junhua graduated from SP in 2012 and continues to pursue his passion at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).
