Two SP Business School teams, “VSA” and “District 3” from the Diploma in Human Resource Management with Psychology (DHRMP) emerged FIRST and THIRD placings (Polytechnic / University Category) of the Singapore HR Challenge 2014 which was held on Sat, 15 February 2014 at MLT 12. Our DHRMP student, Vivien Ng also clinched the “Best Speaker” Award in this competition. This event was organised by the Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI).
The theme for Singapore HR Challenge 2014 is Building HR capabilities for Small and Medium Organisations. This theme attempts to highlight the current national challenges and scenario and the various strategies that leaders and organisations can adopt to overcome the challenge of building up a high-skilled, productive and innovative workforce. Give ideas, discuss and provide insights into ways that companies could provide for better work-life for their employees leading to better family ties, children and quality of life, i.e. overall progress for self, others and Singapore.
This is what team leader of the champion team, Vivien Ng has to say about her experience:
“It is a great learning opportunity on different levels, comforting to know that our voice matters despite the lack of professional experience. It was tedious and tiring but self-reminders always help e.g. "Remember the bigger picture". We learnt how to balance work out of work and other commitments without compromising on providing quality input. I've mastered the art of collaboration as well. The HR Challenge allows us to apply what we have learnt these 3 years in Singapore Polytechnic. It allows us to be able to put what I know into good and practical use. This has given us more confidence in HR and in our ability to handle challenges faced in the real corporate world. The experience is invaluable.”
The Team walked away with:
• S$1,000 cash
• Interview feature in Human Capital magazine, Asia Pacific’s Foremost HR magazine
Each Member
• Recognition Plaques (Team) & Certificates (Individual)
• 4 Complimentary invitations to SHRI Conferences & Seminars*
Kimberly Tan, a member of “District 3” team added, “The Challenge is indeed a valuable experience and exposure which we can never get in the classroom. Through the Challenge, I was able to translate theory into actual practice, seeing many of the things we’ve learnt put to use in real corporate contexts. We learnt about good teamwork and in fact, we are more bonded having to work closely together for many hours! Of course, we learnt about good time management – juggling with school work (continual assessments, projects, reports, presentations) and HR Challenge report and presentations! I would strongly encourage our course-mates to participate in next year’s Challenge.”
Well said and we certainly look forward to another enriching and valuable experience for our DHRMP students in the HR Challenge 2015!
