ICreate 2013 in Korea

Being in I-Create has given me much valuable knowledge and a once in a life time experience that I would never forget or get elsewhere. I am very thankful to Singapore Polytechnic and my supervisor Dr Lee that made all this possible for me.

South Korea is an eye opener for me as there are a lot of cultural differences that we do not witness in South East Asia. For starters, it is very hard to find your place around as there aren’t many signboards written in English. Another problem is the language barrier we faced when trying to communicate with the locals.

During my time there, I gained insight on the rehabilitation market as I found out that there are up to 100 exhibitors of companies that are involved in rehabilitation products and services. Walking through every booth actually makes me realize that there are tons of rehabilitation technologies that we are not aware of.

Besides that, I was given an opportunity to get to know various presenters from various universities around the world. These presenters come from famous universities like University Technology Malaya, Gajah Mada University, Seoul University of Technology and Mahlindo University. I learned from my fellow peers on the various kinds of technology that could be used to carry out the same function.

We also had a chance to visit Seoul, the heart of the city, to do some souvenir shopping. Walking around the busy streets of Myeongdong makes us feel small in compare with the big city of shopping.

Overall, we had a great time in interacting with people from all around the world and enjoyed our Seoul experience immensely.

My Overseas Industrial Training Programme (OITP) in Changchun, China

Written by Amos Wong, 2nd year DBEN student.

My OITP at FAW General Hospital in Changchun, China is unforgettable. This is because I was given the opportunity to get up close and personal with different highly advanced medical equipment in the hospital. I also had a fruitful experience attending lectures or sharing session with medical specialists and professionals in various departments.

Learning in an actual workplace is very different from learning in classroom. OITP makes the whole learning process more practical and memorable. OITP is not just about learning the skill of working. It is also an opportunity for me to discover the cultural difference in China and their workplace. In fact, there are a lot more to explore in China especially food, shopping, places of attraction, people and environment.

The experience of working and living together with my friends for six weeks is not what I can experience every day. We get the chance to eat together, to go out together, to understand each other better and to explore the unknown together. These experiences definitely helped enhance my DEBN experience and prepared me to work in the bioengineering industry in future.”
