The “Active Partner Award” was presented at the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Day in October 2012 in recognition of Diploma in Biomedical Science (DBS) students’ contribution and commitment to several community service activities at Lakeside Family Centre.
“It is our great pleasure to be able to partner with Singapore Polytechnic Diploma in Biomedical Science Students to transform lives and transform communities." Said Alvin Teo, Community Partnerships & Volunteer Management Executive, Lakeside Family Centre.
DBS students have been actively involved in community service effort for the children and families from less privileged background living around Lakeside Family Centres at Jurong West, Jurong East, and Taman Jurong. They conducted Healthy Lifestyle Children Holiday Camp in June, Mother’s Celebration in May, and continuous outreach at the Family In-Transition (FiT) Centre for displaced families who need temporary shelter, and other outreach effort.
Lim Yu Jie, DBS student and President of DBSSC, shared, “Through this community service outreach, a sense of empathy was inculcated into every student volunteer. The smiles of the children that we served will be etched in our minds, as fond memories of our experience. We are constantly reminded during our fight for academic excellence that there are people out there who are less fortunate, and we can contribute in our little ways.”
As key driver of this community initiative, Yu Jie was awarded the “Lakeside Family Centre Outstanding Volunteer Award – Specialised Services”.
DBSSC hopes that volunteerism will become part of the tradition amongst students and graduates of the DBS programme.
