The Crowbar Awards 2010

13 July 2010

Singapore’s prestigious Crowbar Awards 2010 concluded recently on the 24th August 2010 with a big bang for Singapore Polytechnic’s Diploma in Digital Media (DDM) programme.  Two of our student films are among the award winners and they stand in the league of the finest entries of this year. One is the animated short, titled "The Wedding Interlude" and the other is a live action short  "Going Home".

The animated short, “The Wedding Interlude” clinched a silver award in Animation and a Bronze award in Art Direction. Created as a Final Year Project, it is the culmination of a semester's worth of hard work from a team of four DDM (3D Animation option) students - Aileen Stina, Huang Ji, Nur Ernie Aryanie Binte Rani and lead by Ms Clara Wan May Yoke.

The journey to creating an animated short is an arduous process, from ideas on paper to creating everything from scratch on a computer. The students felt that the curriculum and guidance from the DDM (3D Animation Option) have enabled them to grow and develop their skills and creativity. More importantly, "Passion is the key", Clara quipped after receiving the award. Agreeing wholeheartedly, Aileen added "You have to love what you are doing, enjoy it and pour out your soul into it".

"Going Home", the live action short film on dementia clinched a Silver Award in the Short Film category. This film had previously won the First Prize in the Tertiary Category of the "Living with Dementia" video competition organised by the Alzheimer's Disease Association. It was also one of the highlights on Youtube when at the beginning of the year. The creative team behind this masterpiece is Leonard Chow, Austin Lai and Joseph Chang and they were all recent graduates of the Diploma in Digital Media (CG Option).

Filled with elation while reminiscing their past experiences, the students mused "We're very happy with the results even though it was produced in the midst of assignment deadlines and exams".  They also attributed their success to the cast, crew and also the team of DDM (CG Option) lecturers who guided them.

We would like to congratulate our award winners and also encourage our current batches of digital media students to look at them as a source of inspiration and strive for greater heights.
