On the 12th day of the Lunar New Year, more than 100 guests consisting of entrepreneurs from the Singapore Polytechnic Entrepreneurs’ Club (SPEC), Singapore Polytechnic (SP) management and staff, students from the respective academic schools and alumni gathered at the Singapore Polytechnic Graduates Guild to usher in the festive mood for the year of the Snake.
The evening started with a lion dance performance, where a scroll of well wishes believed to bring in good luck and happiness was presented to the SPEC President, Mr Daniel Tan.
One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the donation from SPEC to Singapore Polytechnic for the SPEC Award, which is an annual scholarship sponsored by SPEC, given to selected SP students who are academically inclined and financially challenged.
Another acme of the night was the traditional lohei session. Yusheng, also known as lo hei is a Teochew-style raw fish salad. Yusheng literally means "raw fish" and is commonly conflated with its homophone "abundance” and interpreted as a homophone for an increase in abundance. Therefore, yusheng is considered a symbol of abundance, prosperity and vigor. The lohei was led by Mr Kelvin Tan from SPEC, who gathered everyone at the ballroom to usher in the well wishes for the New Year through the tossing of the ingredients, which had everyone basking in the Chinese New Year atmosphere.
Apart from the traditional lunar New Year celebrations, the SPEC CNY lohei dinner this year had a special significance, as the students from the respective academic schools were seated together with the entrepreneurs, and were able to hear from their personal stories, creating an experiential learning journey and out-of-the-classroom learning experience for them.
The event cascaded to a heart-warming moment, where one of the SPEC Award recipients, Nur Raihana, went on stage to give her thank you speech to share on how the scholarship had helped the other recipients and herself in her studies, without the need for financial worries.
The event was a success, with positive accolades for the great entertainment, sumptuous dinner and the meaningful message behind the night.
“I enjoyed the dinner, and learnt a lot from the entrepreneurs themselves. This experience is far more than what the textbooks can bring to us, and will prove useful to us in our future entrepreneur road”, as quoted from one of the students attending the dinner.
This event is organised by the Alumni Relations Office (ARO).
