The School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering offers the Specialist Diploma in Biomedical Engineering as a part-time course. This course is designed for technologist and engineers who would like to train or retrain in biomedical engineering.
Students are expected to have access to computer and internet during your study at SP eg. e-learning, writing report, etc.Course Objectives
This course aims to provide them with practical knowledge and understanding of biomedical engineering as applied to the healthcare industries such as hospitals, medical equipment manufacturing, servicing and sales companies, and medical research centres.
This course is designed for technologist and engineers who intend to work or are presently working in healthcare industry. Minimum Entry Requirements
Applicants to the course must have, as a minimum requirement, a diploma or degree in any area of electrical, electronic, telecommunication, communication, instrumentation, control engineering, mechanical, mechatronics or related field. Applicants with other equivalent qualifications will be considered on a case-to-case basis.
Applicants with approved equivalent diploma qualifications from other Asian Countries should have first class or equivalent grade or second-class equivalent grade with three years of related work experience.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on evidence of at least 5 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted will have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.
The course is a one-year part-time evenings-only programme. The course consists of 2 Post Diploma Certificates conducted over 2 semesters, 1 PDC per semester, of 15 weeks each. The first PDC to start with is PDC1. Students will take two modules semester 1 and three modules in semester 2.
Each PDC will consist of a few modules and the details are as follows
PDC 1 Certificate in Fundamentals of Biomedical Engineering
Module 1 – Anatomy and Physiology (AP)
Module 2 – Introduction to Biomedical Engineering (IBE)
PDC 2 Certificate in Biomedical Engineering Applications
Module 3 – Biomedical Instrumentation (BI)
Module 4 – Biomedical Equipment & Engineering Practices (BEEP)
Module 5 – Project (PROJ)
Award / Certification / Accreditation
Upon completion of two Certificates within a two-year validity period, the participant will be conferred a Specialist Diploma qualification from Singapore Polytechnic.
