S’pore poly team turns burnt waste into useful material

07 Dec 2019

SP’s Diploma in Civil Engineering with Business students - Sakalesh Ashoka Rugi, Nicolaus Syaiful and Jordan Lim – have discovered that incinerated bottom ash (IBA), which is the by-product of incinerating waste, could be turned into an aerogel. The team also developed four unique applications for their aerogel: as a replacement for sand in concrete, a water decontaminant, a sound barrier and a thermal blanket. All four applications are novel and SP is searching for partners to further develop and commercialise the aerogel.
