SB Milestones: History and Development of SB (1986 - 2016)

       
1986
  • Business Administration Department set up
  • Launch of Diploma in Business Administration (DBA)
  • Launch of Transport & Distribution option for DBA
  • Launch of Marketing option for DBA
  • Launch of Financial Services option for DBA
  • The Department of Business Administration, was set up in October 1986 at Block 6, Singapore Polytechnic. The Department of Business Administration was officially renamed as the 'School of Business' in 2000. It started with eight members of staff.
1989
  • An off-site campus at Labrador was set up
  • Launch of Advanced Diploma in Business Information Systems
  • An off-site campus at Labrador was set up to cater for the increase intake of students and lecturers. The 'School of Business' thus operated from two venues.
1990
  • Launch of Retail Management option for DBA
1991
  • Launch of Diploma in Accountancy (DAC)
  • Launch of Diploma in Banking & Financial Services (DBF), absorbing the Financial Services Option under DBA
  • A permanent place was set up for the Department of Business Administration lecturers and staff at Block 19 at Singapore Polytechnic.
1992
  • Launch of Public Relations & Advertising option for DBA
1994
  • Launch of Diploma in Marketing
  • In January 1994, Singapore's first simulated dealing facility for students was established in School of Business's Foreign Exchange Dealing Room.
  • School of Business began to send its students overseas for the Industrial Training Programme (ITP) - 39 students went to Suzhou, China.
1995
  • Launch of Advanced Diploma in Strategic Marketing
  • DMC students supported MediaCorp in conducting two surveys "Youth and the Important Things in Their Lives" and "Youths and their Views on Money and Love" in connection with a newly launched news programme, Channel U News Club.
1996
  • School of Business 10th Anniversary Celebration highlights - an IT Seminar jointly organised with Microsoft to launch a new IT module for School of Business students. The module covers areas such as workgroup computing, multimedia, internet, networking and video conferencing, all aimed to equip students with the latest in IT applications in the business environment.
1997
  • School of Business launched its first MicroEconomics multimedia package to junior colleges and ITE. The package in the form of a CD-Rom, is aimed at making Economics more interesting and interactive for students.
1998
  • Launch of the Centre for Enterprise and Executive Development and Research (CEEDAR), the consultancy arm of the school
  • ATTITUDE, our very own newsletter was launched in October 1998. The theme of the launch and the corresponding first edition of the newsletter was "Dreams".
  • The Speech Cafcopy; was first launched and is now an annual event. It is a fun-filled programme for secondary school students; aim to make public speaking easy and attractive.
1999
  • Launch of E-Commerce option for DBA
  • Communications and Travel Management option for DBA was restructured into two news options: Supply Chain Management option and Tourism Management option
  • The Centre for E-Commerce was built in our School. It provides the relevant training to meet the increasing industry demand for IT manpower with expertise in Internet/ Intranet computing and E-Commerce. It will also serve as a resource centre for E-Commerce, with reference publications and training materials made available.
  • Under DBA, a new option was introduced - the E-commerce Option.
2000
  • Business Administration Department renamed as School of Business
2001
  • Launch of Diploma in Media and Communication (DMC)
  • Launch of Diploma in Business Information Technology (DBIT)
2005
  • Launch of Entrepreneurship Concentration option for final-year DBA students
  • Launch of Specialist Diploma in Digital Film & TV (Diploma-Plus Programme)
  • Launch of Certificate in Software Programming Applications (Diploma Plus programme)
2006
  • Launch of Diploma in Tourism & Resort Management (DTRM)
  • Launch of Diploma in Financial Informatics (DFI)
2007
  • Launch of Specialist Diploma in Applied Business Psychology
  • Launch of Entrepreneurship Incubation Centre
2008
  • Launch of Diploma in Human Resource Management with Psychology (DHRMP)
2009
  • Launch of Diploma in Engineering with Business (DEB)
  • Launch of Diploma in International Business (DIB)
2010
  • Launch of Certificate in Accounting;
2011
  • Launch of Diploma in Business Innovation and Design (DBID)
  • Collaboration between SP Business School and Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)to award CIMA Diploma in Management Accounting and Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting.
  • Opening of the Singapore Polytechnic Entrepreneurship Living Laboratory(SPELL).
2012
  • Renaming of Diploma in Banking and Financial Services (DBF) to Diploma in Banking and Finance (DBKF)

2016
  • Appointed HR Sector Lead for Polytechnics and ITE, strengthening relationships with the HR community to implement SkillsFuture and sector development initiatives.
  • Revamp of the Diploma in Banking and Finance (DBKF) curriculum structure and integrated the two options (i.e. Banking and Financial Trading) by focusing on three key pillars (Expertise and Insights, Digital and Analytical Skills and Industry Relevance and Recognition) and four competencies (Global Mindset, Design Thinking, Problem-solving and Communication).
  • Launch of part-time Diploma in Business Practice (Accounting) (DBACC)
  • Launch of Specialist Diploma in Enhanced Human Resource Skills (NSEHR)
  • Launch of Specialist Diploma in Digital Marketing & Analytics (NSDMA)
  • Launch of part-time Professional Chartered Accountancy (PCA) course to better prepare and fast-track students to complete the modules of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) Associate Chartered Accountant examination
2017
  • Business Innovation Centre (BIC) was set up in 2017 to partner and help enterprises in their business transformation journey, by providing solutions to innovate their business, enhance productivity, build international connections an to develop human capital capabilities.

2018
  • SB started Applied Industry Project.  This is a final year project for all Year 3 students who will complete a final year project with industry clients under the guidance of lecturers.  The projects are paid and students interact with client representatives and propose solutions to real client problem statements making the project realistic and applicable.
  • SP DAC-ICAEW Experiential Learning Programme was started with students from Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia attending lessons in SP and doing industry visits.
  • Launch of Specialist Diploma in Professional Accounting (NSPA)
  • Launch of part-time Diploma in Business Practice (Human Capital) (DBHC)
  • Launch of part-time Diploma (Conversion) in Supply Chain Management and Innovation (NVSCI)
2019
  • First polytechnic to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) to help enhance the digital capabilities of Small Medium Practices (SMPs), through the Client Project module. 
  • DHRMP incorporated professional assessment from the Institute for Human Resource Professionals (IHRP), offering our students the opportunity to be an IHRP Certified Associate (IHRP-CA) and giving them a head start in their IHRP certification journey and career.
  • SP Business Innovation Centre launched Student Agency, which is the consultancy agency and provides in-house internship for students.
  • Launch of the Common Business Programme (CBP).  It is one of the two common entry business programme in Singapore that is year-long. CBP students find out more about the six specialisations through the Option Exploration Programme, career profiling consultation and ECG advice.
  • Launch of Specialist Diploma in Management Accounting & Analytics (NSMAA)
  • Launch of Specialist Diploma in Specialist Diploma in Technology, Innovation & Analytics for Financial Sector Professionals (NSTIA)

2020


  • Business Essentials Through Action (BETA) module was started with Year 1 CBP students who learn business by launching and running an actual business, with profits donated to a charity of their choice.  BETA module will be scaled up to all Year 1 students by AY2025/26.
2021
  • Launch of Specialist Diploma in Professional Accounting & Technology (NSPAT)
  • Pilot run of Vietnam internship for DAC students
  • SP Business Innovation Centre together with DHRMP co-organised the biennial HR symposium with the Institutes of Higher Learning, Ministry of Manpower and lHRP, bringing in more than 2000 industry participants during the event.
2022
  • MOU signing with National Council of Social Service (NCSS) to strengthen the core fundamentals of Social Service Agencies (SSAs) in finance and accountancy, Human Resources, Administration, Corporate Secretarial Services and Digital Marketing by improving the digital capabilities of the SSAs through student projects and staff consultancy.
  • Launch of Specialist Diploma in Specialist Diploma in Workplace and Career Counselling (NSWCC)
  • Launch of SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme in Applied HR and Business Digitalisation
  • Rolled out of revamped DBA and DBKF courses. The revamped DBA course offers students choice and flexibility in training them to be adaptable and well-versed in multiple discipline while the revamped DBKF course is technology driven with industry focused in Fintech and Analytics. Review of DAC course introducing new relevant topics in sustainability, predictive analytics and forensic accounting.

  • School of Business (SB) re-started overseas programmes after Covid-19 pandemic. DAC students resumed overseas internship in Vietnam, in collaboration with ICAEW. SB students taking an elective module on Project Expedition travelled to Indonesia to conduct consumer insight studies for the F&B industry in Dec 2022. SB together with Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam universities came together online to conduct ASEAN consumer market studies in June 2022.
