Staff of Singapore Polytechnic

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good afternoon.

It gives me great pleasure to be here today at the 56th Singapore Polytechnic Graduation Ceremony.  I applaud all graduands and award winners from the School of Chemical & Life Sciences (CLS) on your achievements.

Integrity – be true to yourself

I hope you leave this course inspired. What you graduate with gives you the power to shape our collective future and solve some of the biggest challenges facing our world today

  • My Chemical Engineering journey and Bhopal
  • How Engineering as a career may be perceived
  • Discern your response to the world
  • Be true to yourself

Integrity – be true to your profession

As an Engineer, I am proud of my profession. In the UK, we have the opportunity to become Chartered Engineers, although this is voluntary. In Canada where I worked for four years, it was a requirement. Part of that process involves passing an ethics exam and committing to practise Engineering responsibly, irrespective of what your company may direct you – I liked that.

  • What it means to be a Professional Engineer
  • Using our skills to solve the world’s Energy and Environmental challenges
  • Reconciling our modern life and the cost to the environment, as engineers and scientists, we are well-placed to help

Integrity – be true to society

Helping to address environmental challenges is actually bigger than just being true to our professions, it is actually about being true to society.

  • Daughter’s class and 11-year-olds’ perception
  • Reality of plastic litter in the ocean
  • 1967 The Graduate and the plastics industry
  • Our responsibility
  • Back to Bhopal
  • Living in the present
  • Contributing to Singapore
  • Call to the graduands

As you graduate, I urge you to make the most of your chosen studies and contribute to the world’s biggest challenges – energy, sustainability, aging population – but above all, do it with regard to safety and environmental responsibility.

I extend my heartiest congratulations on the successful completion of your studies at Singapore Polytechnic and wish each of you success in your career and further studies.

Thank you.
