This year’s National Day celebrations will feature more than 1,200 student volunteers who will assist the public around the Padang and its surrounding areas, and help liven up the performances. Some students began their training as early as three months ago. Dressed in brightly coloured outfits and interacting with the audience, 500 of these volunteers come from TOUCH Community Services. Among them is 21-year-old Xie Jun Fa. Xie, an SP Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering student and member of the TOUCH Community Services’ cheer squad, said: “We’ll be dancing in front of the audience — sometimes we help them take photos, and we also make balloon sculptures like dogs or flowers. One memorable experience was when I saw an elderly couple — they were so sweet, so I made a heart-shaped balloon for them. They were really happy.” For the first time, these cheer squad volunteers will perform not just in front of the audience, but also on the main stage. They began training in May. TP student Cai Shi Han, said: “Because this year’s National Day celebration is really big and draws people from many places, we assist those who may not be able to walk long distances, or those in wheelchairs. We’ll help guide them to the nearest lifts or provide them with special access routes so they can reach the venue with less walking.”
