360-Scenario Editor for Ship Familiarization Many maritime environments are hazardous and require safety induction before access. Halting operations for a few new crew members is often not cost- or time-effective. Virtual tours using 360° images or videos offer realistic access to hard-to-reach areas without disruption. Compared to fully rendered 3D environments, captured 360° visuals provide greater realism. For effective safety induction, these tours must include annotations and hotspots, though creating and editing them can be complex. Maritime companies, especially ship managers, can now create virtual walkthroughs for training and familiarisation at a fraction of the cost and time.

AICATSAN: AI-Based Competency Assessment Tool for Safe Navigation Measuring and assessing human performance is key to enhancing maritime navigational safety. An AI-based Competency Assessment Tool for Safe Navigation (AICATSAN) is being developed to evaluate both technical and soft skills—such as situational awareness, decision-making, leadership, teamwork, and communication. Using multi-source data from eye trackers, EEG, heart rate, and speech, AICATSAN provides a comprehensive assessment of navigational competence.

Immersive Asset Library for Maritime Application This Storage and Retrieval Library System is designed to house commonly used digital assets for maritime applications, including 3D models, environment prefabs, animations, and code snippets. Assets will be categorised and tagged for easy retrieval via a web-based interface. The system aims to accelerate the development of immersive training solutions, enhancing confidence in crew capabilities. It also empowers maritime students to create higher-level learning experiences, supporting deeper understanding for both creators and users of these solutions.

Digital Testing of Navigation Safety for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships to Support Sea Trials This project supports the development of a guidance document outlining the minimum Phase 0 evaluations—numerical simulations, experimental modelling, and simulator testing—required for autonomous vessels before sea trials. Initiated by MPA’s Maritime Autonomous Ships Steering Committee, the goal is to ensure vessels demonstrate safe operation and readiness through simulated testing, especially for scenarios unsafe to conduct at sea. The resulting guidelines will help establish standardised submission requirements to MPA, promoting consistency and safety in autonomous vessel testing.
