Singtel’s regional data centre arm, Nxera, and its partners plan to hire over 500 people in Singapore in the coming months to meet rising demand for AI data centre services. Notably, about 40% of these roles are entry-level, bucking global trends of reduced junior hiring due to AI automation. At the Sustainable AI Data Centre Career Day on 25 July—attended by 1,000 tertiary students as part of the SkillsFuture Festival—Nxera CEO Bill Chang announced initiatives to attract and prepare local talent, especially from ITE and polytechnics, through multiple pathways such as work-study programmes. Nxera has partnered with ITE, SIT, and TP, NYP, and SP to co-develop AI data centre-related courses. In his keynote, Senior Minister of State for Digital Development and Information and Health Mr Tan Kiat How reaffirmed government support for ITE and polytechnic graduates, citing efforts like the TechSkills Accelerator for ITE and Polytechnics Alliance, which has secured over 1,000 quality tech jobs since 2022. He also noted that the median salary for info-comm poly graduates rose from $2,700 in 2022 to $2,900 in 2024, indicating positive job prospects.
