South West CDC and 9 IHLs set up community innovation lab to help young people solve community problems

On Tuesday, 5 November, the South West CDC signed an MOU with nine institutes of higher learning (IHLs) to establish the region’s first innovation lab. This lab will enable students from different institutions to collaborate and pilot creative ideas aimed at improving the community and residents' quality of life. The projects cover themes such as the economy, health, society, sustainability, infrastructure and design, disability support, and mental health. Students will work with grassroots organisations, social service agencies, government bodies, hospitals, and family service centres to create practical community solutions. Ms Low Yen Ling, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Culture, Community, and Youth, who also serves as the Mayor of the South West District, signed the MOU with representatives from the nine institutions: ITE College West, NP, SP, NUS, NTU, SMU, SUSS, SUTD, and LASALLE College of the Arts.  Liu En Ting and Xu Wen Jie from NP, along with Xu Yu Li from Nan Chiau High School, formed a team through the "STEAMunity" programme jointly organised by SUTD and the Singapore Science Centre. They initiated a campaign to promote proper bicycle parking practices. The first round of STEAMunity activities began in June this year and will continue until January next year. A total of 52 student mentors from SUTD and TP are guiding 204 students from 17 secondary schools, junior colleges, and polytechnics, with a focus on public health, climate change, and related issues.
