Conquering the Mid-Career Pivot

Jason Portrait 1

Having always been drawn to innovations that help improve people’s lives, Jason Lim chose to study Mechanical Engineering at Singapore Polytechnic (SP) as he was inspired by the programme’s focus on real-world applications.

Now as the newly-appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Fu Yu Corporation Limited, he shares more about how his background in Mechanical Engineering helped propel him to create a thriving career in the Medical and Life Sciences industry.

Just Starting Out

Back in SP, Jason specialised in automation and robotics and picked up several skills, such as programming and design in Engineering. It was here that he encountered exciting challenges, such as learning AutoCAD, a must-know software essential for engineers.

“I found it hard to memorise the different commands and apply them intuitively. But with the help of my lecturer who taught me shortcuts and countless hours spent in the lab to practise, I eventually mastered the software.”

Jason shares more on the highlight of his time at SP, which was getting to spend time with his friends working on various projects. While figuring out the task or assignment, Jason and his coursemates had the flexibility to experiment with which method would work best. This trial-and-error process meant working through nights and gaining a sense of accomplishment after a project was done well.

“It was a really enjoyable time. We became a close-knit group, and we still catch up today from time to time.”

Foray Into the Working World

“My first job after university was at Univac as a project engineer. I requested to be put on the job rotation track, so I could learn firsthand how the product works as a machinist.”

In this role, Jason could see the machines that made the products and all the other intricacies of the entire process. The practical-learning style at SP helped provide the foundation he needed to operate the machines with ease.

After 15 years at Univac, Jason rose through the ranks to become Vice-President. Keeping to his mechanical engineering roots, he pushed for innovation and worked closely with the design team.

Making the Jump

While the industries may be worlds apart, the applications remain similar. Inspired by the evolving needs of the manufacturing sectors in the Medical and Life Sciences industry, Jason jumped on the opportunity to apply his engineering expertise to push for more innovation.

“With my product design know-how and mould-making knowledge, I helped to implement more innovative production processes that helped our customers to reduce the cost and improve the efficiency of the manufacturing processes.”

Additionally, Jason was keenly aware that he needed a deep understanding of the medical and life sciences industry, and so he committed to continuous learning and upskilling.

He also credits his successful transition to the soft skills he picked up due to his former experience in business development. Balancing his engineering skills with his ability to manage his team and clients while sourcing new opportunities is what helped him stand out from the crowd.

One Year In

In his first year as COO, Jason’s efforts have been concentrated on revamping the Fu Yu manufacturing factories to become smart factories.

“I have developed an operational strategy and automated manufacturing processes, with the aim of moving towards full automation with Manufacturing Execution System (MES). It’s a refreshing change of pace, and I find it really enriching and dynamic.”

With six operational sites under his charge, he interacts with the various teams daily and closely follows the operational processes himself to be able to coach his teams to a solution.

What’s Next

When asked where the medical and life sciences industry is headed, Jason shares how it is focusing on personalised healthcare solutions.

“By tapping into precision engineering and technological advances, we can leverage data analytics to create betterfit medical devices and care for more people while maintaining high standards of individualised care.”

Two Sides of the Same Coin

With the need for constant innovation in many industries, Jason emphasises the importance of continuous learning and upskilling.

“For SP students and alumni, staying adaptable and continuously updating your skills is critical for success. Additional hands-on internships will help you to gain more valuable practical experience and open up new opportunities.”
