Shermaine Tung, a former national pentathlete, has had an 18-year sporting journey spanning shooting, kayaking, and modern pentathlon – a sport that combines fencing, swimming, shooting, running, and equestrian show jumping. Her journey began in 2007 at the Singapore Sports School, where she took up shooting. She later transitioned to modern pentathlon in preparation for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. Although she did not qualify for the Games due to age, she continued training and later switched to kayaking while studying at SP, where shooting or pentathlon were not offered. In 2022, after suffering a serious back injury from a horse-riding fall that required surgery, Tung then rediscovered her passion for kayaking during recovery. Encouraged by her national coach, she returned to the sport competitively, motivated by her love for it. Now 30 and in the twilight of her career, Tung is giving kayaking one final push before retiring, doing her best to qualify for the SEA Games in December and the Asian Games next year.
