From showers to signature scents: Youth are embracing fragrances

A TikTok debate about whether Singaporeans should shower in the morning unexpectedly intensified youth interest in smelling good. Interviews with young people, business owners and experts show that many youths – especially boys and young men – are increasingly obsessed with fragrances. Influenced by TikTok creators and the “smellmaxxing” trend, they spend heavily on perfumes to boost confidence and express identity. SP Diploma in Perfumery and Cosmetic Science Lecturer Mr Jon Chua noted that Gen Z uses fragrance as a personal identity marker, seeking niche, personalised scents rather than following old mainstream designer trends. SP student Lee Dayeon said perfume reflects her personality, and she often shops with her mother for guidance. DIY fragrance bars have also become popular, with brands like Lynk Fragrances offering mix-and-match scent options online. RP alumna, Tan Wan Yi Abigail, enjoyed her own DIY perfume-making experience, reflecting a growing trend of youth personalising scents as part of their lifestyle.
