Singapore Polytechnic student entrepreneurs stitch sustainability into pet fashion

Students from SP are weaving sustainability into entrepreneurship through a pet fashion venture that transforms upcycled fabrics into functional accessories. Business students Amanda Chua and Syahirah Idora Shahrin, both 20, started the project with $1,000 in seed funding from SP’s Business Essentials Through Action (BETA) Programme. Initially planning to sell recycled-fabric T-shirts, they pivoted after identifying a niche in pet accessories, creating handmade items such as bibs, collars and manner belts using donated or leftover fabrics. Supported by a team of eight classmates, the students test their designs on their own pets to ensure comfort and practicality, with each product varying slightly depending on available materials. The business, run through platforms like Carousell and Instagram as well as pop-up booths on campus, has become a hands-on learning experience in marketing, customer engagement and teamwork. Rather than keeping the profits, the students donate all proceeds to Honour Singapore, reflecting their focus on social impact and ethical entrepreneurship while gaining real-world business exposure through their time at SP.
