A team of students from SP, including final-year Diploma in Computer Engineering student Priscilla Loi Hui Ying, has developed a VR-based rehabilitation system for seniors, particularly those recovering from strokes. The system transforms repetitive therapy exercises into engaging multiplayer games that combine physical activity, cognitive stimulation, and social interaction. Games such as ActiveUs and CookLah help seniors improve balance, coordination, memory, and attention while fostering teamwork and connection, reducing feelings of isolation during recovery. The team tested the VR system in community centres and gathered feedback to improve accessibility, usability, and multilingual support. They envision integrating VR into care homes’ weekly rehabilitation programmes, complementing existing social activities and promoting active ageing. Priscilla, her teammate, Nahilus Ng Ding Xuan, and their project supervisor, Dr Jaichandar, a senior specialist in biomedical engineering at SP, aim to expand the programme to more senior homes across Singapore, using technology to enhance seniors’ well-being, independence, and quality of life.
