Mentoring is a well-used term and management tool in almost all organisation. These carefully crafted two half-day sessions seek to increase insights and foster alignment among the senior executives on this common topic of mentoring. In doing so, senior executives will have a shared understanding and perspective on the significance and challenges of effective mentoring in an organisation. These sessions will also surface the intentionality of the skills needed in the mentoring process, which had been commonly used unconsciously. 

Course Objective

The objective of this two half-day programme is to enhance the C-suite executives' strategic insights, discernment, and perceptivity on mentoring and increased awareness to the two essential skills - listening and asking questions, in the process of mentoring.

Course Outline

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:  

  • Explain the terminologies used in mentoring and coaching. 
  •  Analyse the roles and mindsets of mentors and mentees.
  • List the benefits and challenges of workplace mentoring.
  • Analyse the two key skills (listening and questioning) to deploy them in the mentoring process. 
Topics to be covered

1. An understanding and clarity on mentoring, and coaching.
 
  •  Discussion and guidelines on role differences and tricky situations when these roles are integrated with the role of a manager.
2. Roles and mindsets of mentors and mentees. 

  • Success factors and benefits 

  • Connect mentoring to mentors’ personal experience 

  • Using stories, challenge, feedback and connections 

  • Identify mentors’ teachable stories 

  • Scenarios to support, inspire, challenge and feedback to mentees 

  • Create a productive and nurturing mentoring context 

  • Creating pulse check opportunities 

  • Wrapping up a mentoring partnership 

3. Benefits and challenges of workplace mentoring

  • Agreeing on success indicators and milestones 
  • Breaking down status barrier, overcome barriers, energize actions and report back 
  • Identify derailers and energizers 
  • Dealing with situations when mentoring is not working out 
  • What to do in between mentoring meetings – follow through, connect, drop in
4. The two essential skills in the mentoring process; listening and asking questions. 

  • Exercise: listening without judgement, advice or opinion
  • Use of questions to probe for assumptions
