Empowering Our Students Through Holistic Development at BioBiz 2025

At Singapore Polytechnic, we believe in empowering our students to grow beyond the classroom and develop holistically as confident, self-directed learners ready to take on future challenges.

The BioBiz 2025 Conference on 25 October 2025 was a student-organised biopharma and biomedical event, gave our students the opportunity to apply their skills, collaborate across disciplines, and engage directly with industry leaders.

This year, students from the Diplomas in Biomedical Science (DBS) and Chemical Engineering (DCHE) courses took on key roles in the organising committee, working across multiple streams to bring the conference to life. The event was made possible through collaboration with the Biopharmaceutical Manufacturer’s Advisory Council (BMAC) and the guidance of mentors such as Prof Chan Beng Seng (Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health), Prof Chan Sui Yung (Department of Pharmacy), and Ms Yong Hwee Yee, CEO of ALPS Healthcare.

Gerald Cheah, from DCHE, shared: “I worked under the publication team to produce publicity materials such as the banner, logo, and colour themes. BioBiz opened up opportunities to explore new specialisations beyond petrochemicals and showed how chemical engineering principles apply to pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. It was also great to connect with Shiya from Biomedical Science — even though our fields differ, we found common ground in biopharma.”

Tan Shiya, from DBS, reflected: “I gained valuable insights about joining the industry and building a successful start-up in the biomedical field. One memorable piece of advice was, ‘Don’t build your career on a ladder but on a steady path’ — reminding me to focus on growth and conviction rather than just climbing the corporate ladder. BioBiz inspired me to be more self-directed and to seize opportunities to learn and network.”

Their reflection captures the essence of holistic development — building conviction, confidence, and curiosity to grow both professionally and personally.
