Interview with Simon Chee, Employment Support Advisor at Singapore Polytechnic

The latest Polytechnic Graduate Employment Survey shows that full-time employment rates for fresh polytechnic graduates in Singapore have largely remained steady despite economic uncertainty, global headwinds, and technological disruption. Median starting salaries have risen to around S$3,000, reflecting employer efforts to stay competitive and attract talent. Mr Simon Chee, Employment Support Advisor at SP, highlighted that companies are adjusting salaries to retain and recruit fresh graduates, particularly in high-demand sectors such as finance, healthcare, sustainability, green tech, and infocomm. For fields with lower immediate demand, polytechnic graduates are encouraged to adopt an adaptive mindset, be willing to step out of their comfort zones, and absorb skills across sectors. Chee emphasised that AI and automation are reshaping the job landscape, but graduates equipped with creativity, critical thinking, and human-centric skills remain valuable. SP is addressing this by integrating AI, digital literacy, and future-ready skills into its curriculum, ensuring graduates are “AI-ready” and prepared for evolving market demands. Employers increasingly value hands-on experience, technical skills, adaptability, and soft skills such as communication and teamwork. Chee noted that internships and real-world projects are critical, allowing students to gain workplace exposure, demonstrate abilities, and potentially convert internships into full-time roles.
