It’s time the polytechnic diploma got the recognition it deserves

The Straits Times opinion piece argues that polytechnic diplomas in Singapore deserve greater recognition, especially given the skills, experience and real-world readiness that polytechnic graduates bring to the workforce. It highlights how diplomas have been central to Singapore’s economic growth and urges businesses, institutions and society to recognise the diploma as a valuable and legitimate education pathway, not just a lesser alternative to a degree. The writer also notes the historical and ongoing value of polytechnics in Singapore, highlighting that SP, established in 1954, played a key role in supplying a skilled workforce during the country’s early industrialisation. Subsequent polytechnics have continued to provide talent across sectors such as biomedical science, pharmaceuticals, aviation and engineering, supporting economic growth for decades. While university graduates still tend to earn more and secure full-time permanent roles at higher rates, the piece stresses that this should not overshadow the proven skills and contributions of polytechnic graduates, whose vocational education has delivered immense and lasting value. Recent surveys show that although median income for polytechnic graduates is lower than university graduates, it has been gradually increasing, reflecting their growing recognition in the workforce. The column concludes that while many students value diplomas and find them attractive, some employers still hold outdated biases against diploma holders, potentially missing out on talented people who have strong practical skills and industry exposure.
