Singapore to Train Global Maritime Personnel in Low-Emission Fuels

Singapore will establish a Maritime Energy Training Facility (METF) to train international maritime personnel in handling alternative fuels such as methanol and ammonia, with future plans to include hydrogen. Announced during Singapore Maritime Week by Minister for National Development, Mr Chee Hong Tat, the facility aims to equip seafarers with the skills needed for safe operations involving lower-carbon fuels and zero-emission vessels. The MPA noted strong industry demand for shared training infrastructure. Instead of a single site, the METF will be a network of new and existing training facilities to be completed by 2026. This includes a new dual-fuel marine engine simulator and the upgraded S$2.8 million Wavelink Maritime Simulation Centre. Existing training resources will also be integrated, such as simulators at the Singapore Maritime Academy, the Wavelink Maritime Institute, and SP’s Centre of Excellence in Maritime Safety (CEMS), which uses augmented-reality technology. The MPA also signed a letter of intent with 22 industry partners—including international bodies, classification societies, unions, and educational institutions—to collaborate on the METF initiative.
