Safety and optimal performance are paramount considerations for wheelchair users. This course helps users and their caregivers to perform periodic maintenance and servicing to ensure their mobility aids are in the best performing, and safest condition.

Course Objective

The objective of the course is to equip participants with the basic knowledge and skills to service and maintain manual wheelchairs to ensure they are roadworthy and safe.

Course Outline

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the history and evolution of wheelchair design.
2. Identify the different types and purposes of wheelchairs.
3. Identify the different parts of the wheelchairs and their functions.
4. Identify the different tools used to service and maintain wheelchairs.
5. Use appropriate tools to service and maintain wheelchairs according to the organisations’ operating procedures.
6. Evaluate the status of wheelchair conditions by conducting pre-service inspection and post-service quality and functional inspection.

Minimum Requirements

O Level or current wheelchair users.

Certification / Accreditation

• Certificate of Performance (electronic Certificate will be issued)
A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants who meet at least 75% attendance rate

Wheelchair users, care givers, hospital staff, nursing home staff, VWOs, etc.

Dr Chris Lee
Dr Chris Lee

Dr Chris Lee is currently a Lecturer in the School of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, Singapore Polytechnic. He is the Coordinator of the Assistive Technology and Rehabilitation Engineering module. 

Chris has been educating and training both pre-employment (PET), and continuing education and training (CET) students in Singapore Polytechnic, particularly in Assistive Technologies, final year student projects, etc.



Kelvin Chan
Kelvin Chan

Mr Kelvin Chan was the Senior Manager of Kampung Senang Mobility Aids Services and Training Centre. He was the appointed Trainer for Temasek Foundation Cares – Kampung Senang WHEELS Program training active seniors.

He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Nanyang Technological University with more than 15 years experience in Precision Engineering industry. He is also a qualified trainer with WSQ Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment (ACTA) and is conducting National Silver Academy (NSA) course on Introduction to Wheelchair Servicing. 
Kelvin regularly trains volunteers to repair wheelchairs, organise community wheelchair servicing events to support low-income families and happy to share his knowledge with others.

1. Application must be made through STEP. 

2. All successful applicants will be notified with a letter of confirmation via email.
