5 things to know about studying optometry

NP launched the NP-Zeiss Management Suite on 18 September, in collaboration with Zeiss, a leading optical and optoelectronic technology company. The fully digitalised system enhances patient consultation processes, screening accuracy, and allows real-time data sharing. This initiative is part of an updated curriculum co-developed by NP and Zeiss, focusing on myopia management. Year 3 students can now apply for a new 25-week specialised internship programme, an extension from the previous 16-week attachment. The programme includes hands-on clinical training and corporate experience at Zeiss Singapore and its regional office in Manila. The new curriculum equips students with current skills, particularly in response to Singapore’s rising childhood myopia rates. SP also offers a similar Diploma in Optometry, and graduates from both polytechnics can pursue related degrees at universities in the UK or Australia. Dr Martin Kwan, deputy director of School of Health Sciences and senior lecturer in NP Diploma in Optometry, was once a senior optometrist and clinic manager in an ophthalmology clinic. He said: “With technology always advancing, I learnt that it’s important to keep abreast of changes within the industry. This allows us to adapt to the needs of patients and clients.”
