On 30 March, the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre hosted the launch of “Xin Kong Xia Encounter”, a seven-part xinyao documentary produced with Mediacorp. The event gathered major figures from Singapore’s xinyao scene, including Liang Wern Fook, Billy Koh, Lee Wei Song and Lee Si Song, with Prime Minister Mr Lawrence Wong as guest of honour. The documentary traces the rise of xinyao in the 1980s and how Singapore youths used music to express their ideals and emotions, creating a uniquely local music culture. One memorable segment involved former “The Straw” members Billy Koh and Koh Nam Seng returning to SP, where both were students and where the group was formed. According to the filmmakers, the pair became so excited revisiting the campus that the cameraman had to chase after them while filming.
