DPM Mr Heng Swee Keat announced a number of initiatives to promote the transformation and sustainable development of the local manufacturing industry

DPM Heng Swee Keat emphasised Singapore's commitment to advancing AI-enabled manufacturing for a sustainable future, during his speech at the Industrial Transformation Asia-Pacific (ITAP) 2024 event on 14 October. He highlighted that partnerships with like-minded nations are key to achieving Singapore's manufacturing ambitions, which include increasing manufacturing value-added by 50% between 2020 and 2030. DPM Heng noted that the global manufacturing sector accounts for about 20% of carbon emissions, making it crucial for the industry to adopt green solutions to combat climate change. Additionally, AI's transformative impact on manufacturing, which constitutes 20% of Singapore’s GDP, was underscored as pivotal to the future. Several initiatives to bolster collaboration between local and international organisations were announced, including the launch of the Advanced Manufacturing Centre of Innovation by Enterprise Singapore. This new centre, developed in partnership with A*Star’s Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology and four polytechnics—NYP, NP, SP, and TP—will help translate scientific insights into practical solutions for the sector. At the event, SP also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers to foster stronger industry-academia ties and cultivate industry-ready graduates.
