Financial aid from primary school to tertiary education illuminates the path of knowledge for visually impaired students

For primary school, secondary school, ITE, polytechnic, and now university, visually impaired student Eugene Oh has relied on the bursary from the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH) to support his education. Currently a third-year Diploma in Computer Engineering student at SP, he has once again been awarded this bursary this year. "University fees are much higher than those for primary and secondary schools," said Eugene in an interview. "Fortunately, I've been able to get a bursary most of the time since primary school. In July, I went to Scotland for an exchange programme that lasted a month and a half, and the bursary I saved up over the years covered the expenses." In conjunction with International White Cane Day, SAVH held an event at Gardens by the Bay on 13 October and awarded a total of $55,600 in Tan Chay Bing Bursary Awards to 27 visually impaired students from special education schools, polytechnics, ITEs, as well as primary, secondary, and university, who are from low-income families.
